The BirdSO Satellite Invitational for Divisions B and C will run from February 12–19, 2022. Featuring twenty-two official events, five trial events, and five events highlighted by our Computer Science Initiative, the tournament will take place in a virtual format where students will compete at their schools under the supervision of their coaches. The tournament will kick off with an opening ceremony and conclude with an awards ceremony where we will award medals for the top fifteen places and trophies for the top fifteen teams.
The Mini tournament will be run in the Satellite SO format, described in the Rules Manual. Students must compete at their schools under the supervision of their coaches. In addition, our tournament is asynchronous; teams can participate in any of the events at any given 50-minute interval during the duration of the competition (February 12–19, 2022). Teams from the same school are encouraged to take tests at the same time to ensure academic integrity.
The event slate for the Satellite Tournament features twenty-two official events, five trial events, and five Computer Science Initiative events. Events will try to follow the official Rules Manual; however, some modifications may be necessary to adapt to our virtual format. Competitors are encouraged to review sections of the Event Modifications documents relevant to their events prior to the tournament.
Computer Science (CS) Initiative: Considering the increasing prevalence of Computer Science both as a specialized skill and as a tool used across education and science careers, BirdSO is supplementing the Science Olympiad event slate with five additional events that we hope will help offer additional avenues to explore this burgeoning field. For Division B, we'll be running Code Analysis, Cybersecurity, Game On, Run It Code It, and Spreadsheet Scripting. For Division C, we'll be running Bioinformatics, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Machine Learning, and Run It Code It. Many of these events were developed with the help of our BirdSO team and will also be run at the 2022 National Tournament. We're excited to help facillitate the debut of these events during the 2021–2022 season!
All competitors are expected to follow Science Olympiad rules (both event-specific and General Rules), our Academic Honesty Policy, and the additional general policies included below.
To maintain open communication with all coaches and competitors, all email updates to coaches will also be included publicly in the "Email Updates" document linked below. For your convenience, we've also included a tournament timeline and "frequently asked questions" page about our tournaments.
Our tournaments would not be possible without the generous support of our volunteer Event Supervisors. Learn more about the individuals who have dedicated their time towards helping our tournament and making your events possible!
The Mini Tournament will feature a virtual Opening Ceremony on February 11, 2022, at 5:00 PM Pacific Time to kickoff our exciting week of competition. After the competition has concluded, we will host a virtual Awards Ceremony on February 26, 2022, at 5:00 PM Pacific Time where we will recognize the top finishers of both divisions in each event and overall. After the Awards Ceremony, medals and trophies will be mailed to coaches, and graded tests will be made available for study on Scilympiad.
Links to our ceremonies, which will be broadcast on our YouTube channel, will be shared here ahead of each. We hope you'll join us for these exciting events!
After the Awards Ceremony, results for the Satellite Tournament will be posted to Scilympiad and linked below. These preliminary scores will be made available as early as February 26, 2022, at 6:00 PM Pacific Time and will be final on March 1, 2022.
